But your headline is only the beginning. Get all the help you need with creating the username, headline and fantastic profile that can attract the date of your dreams with our unique online dating profile builder and get the best from your online dating experience.
Before you start writing your online dating headline take a look at your chosen online dating site(s) and see what other dating profiles say and check out the format. If you are a man, look at other men’s ad’s that will be competing with yours for attention. Women should do the same. Check out the format and length of the headlines (or Taglines as some sites call them) and see what works. Then think of something unique! |

Try asking a question
Some of the best headlines grab the users’ attention by asking them a question. It should be relevant to your profile but the more obscure the better. People often get drawn in by a question and can’t resist answering it, particularly if it’s quite literal.
Leave the clichés to someone else
Just doing your research will show you how many people write things like ‘Looking for Mr Right’ or ‘I might be the one you’re looking for’ or even ‘I don’t know what to write’! Think about what an overused headline is going to tell someone about you except maybe that you have limited imagination?
Use your favourite quote from a film, poem, book etc.
If you have a favourite quote or line you like to use then use it . There are hundreds of quotations sites on the web so use your search engine to find something that suits you. It needn’t be hilarious but it should be a reflection of your personality in some way and it should evoke a reaction in your readers.
Or try a misquote
Same as above but with a twist! But don’t forget to acknowledge that is what you are doing or people might just think you are stupid!
Be philosophical
Try wearing your heart on your sleeve and stating your philosophy on life in the first few words, you’ll be amazed at the effect!
Limit your use of emoticons and exclamation marks
It can be difficult to express yourself in writing sometimes but some people simply hate emoticons etc. so err on the side of caution and try and leave then out of your headline or at least limit their use.
Use a character from a book, film or history
If there is a particular character you admire then you could use the ‘X seeks Y’ format but give it a bit of a personal twist or you run the risk of falling into the cliché trap e.g. ‘Could you be Mr Darcy, sought to exchange banter with this feisty heroine?’ says more than ‘Girl seeking her Mr Darcy’.
Search the web for examples of what to use and what not to!
There are plenty of sites which list headlines. If you like something then there’s no harm in copying an idea as long as it’s relevant to you! It will also help you identify if a headline you are thinking of is overused.
If you have a pet then you could reference them
If you have a pet pug then you could use it in your profile header. E.G. ‘Besotted pug owner seeks pug lover for mutual pug admiration society’
Ask your friends to describe you in one sentence…
Without using a list of adjectives! This could be testing but will certainly be fun and often your friends see the true you that you may try to shy away from or be too modest to see!
Think of one line to describe your ideal date
Then try it as a headline – it just might work!
Now you have a fantastic headline don't forget your username! Read our article 'What's in a username' for more help and advice! You can also see what other people have written and read an assessment of some example dating headlines in our dating tips for men.
