TEN GREAT FIRST DATE IDEAS
A first date can be nerve wracking for anyone and all the more so if you’re the one choosing your venue. In most cases, it’s still the guy who is likely to make the first move and suggest meeting up. If you’re going to take this step, make the right impression by having a first date idea or two up your sleeve!
If you’ve met through online dating, this will be the first time you meet face to face. So, before you choose your date read on and see if there is a first date tip that will help make your first date a roaring success! |

Firstly, don’t choose anywhere so noisy that conversation will be impossible. If you’re both into clubs, then maybe you could move on after your first date but it’s not a great place for a first date.
Reread her profile, emails etc to remind yourself of her of likes and dislikes. One first date idea is the Zoo, but avoid it if she hates animals and suffers from sever asthma if within 100m of a warthog. Likewise a steakhouse would not be a great first date for a vegetarian.
Pick a public place. She will feel much safer and more comfortable meeting up for a first date with a stranger (which you are, however many emails etc have gone between you) if she knows you have thought about this. Also, make sure it is somewhere you can both arrive at and leave independently and safely.
Another good first date tip is to not discount the options of lunch, dinner or coffee. They are all great choices, but here are a few first date ideas that may help make your first date one to remember.
Picnic in the Park
This can really give you a chance to impress your date! Your picnic can be as lavish and luxurious as you want and will show you have made an effort without going completely over the top. Keep the food easy – ready made sandwiches and fruit salad are fine. Just don’t forget something cool to drink if it’s a hot day, or mulled wine it it’s snowing, a rug to sit on and something (preferably not plastic or disposable) to eat and drink off.
Cinema
Only do this if you have already established a similar taste in films. It’s not great first date idea if one of you really doesn’t enjoy it. Even if you’re prepared to bow to her choice, you really are entitled to enjoy the date too! Allow time for a drink either before or afterwards so that you can at least chat about your choice!
Zoo
This is a great alternative to the more usual options if you both love animals. You have as much or as little opportunity to chat as you need, depending on how the date is going. At least mating gorillas always prove a distraction if conversation dries up! Allow plenty of time though. You can escape after an hour but may end up wanting to spend the whole day there.
Abseiling or Bungee Jumping
If you are both thrill seekers, sitting in a cosy bar for a meal could leave you both feeling restless and bored. So, why not book a session of a high octane sport and let the adrenalin help you along on your first date. Just make sure she’s not National Champion if you’ve never done it before and are a bit afraid of heights. Also, don’t use this as an opportunity to show just how macho you are, a first date is meant to be a shared experience rather than a demonstration.
An Afternoon at the Races
Horse racing, dogs or cars, pick whichever is your thing and you are most likely to enjoy together. Again, something for you both to focus on can take the tension out of the first date situation. Just don’t get so carried away with the racing that you forget about her.
A Balloon Ride
This can be a very romantic first date, so don’t forget the champagne! Plus, if things are going well, you have the perfect excuse to hold her hand when you get a bit scared. It is however, weather dependent, so make sure you have Plan B up your sleeve.
Art Gallery
For the more highbrow amongst you this can be an uplifting first date experience. However, for most of us it’s a chance to look at some interesting art, decide we don’t get most of it and have a laugh about it over a coffee at the end. It could also lead to some lively discussions over the artistic value of a ball of string.
Tour Bus Ride
A ride round your nearest city in an open top tour bus gives a chance to get to know her, your locale and maybe pick out where you’d like to go for lunch after if all goes well. Plus, if it really isn’t working out, you can always get off at the next stop.
Boat Trip
We may not have too many gondolas within reach, but most towns and cities that have a river will have some forms of boat trip available. It could be punting, a river taxi or a champagne cruise. Make sure you can get back to your starting point though, as a long walk or bus ride back could be a let down after such a romantic first date idea.
Kite Flying
The ideal location for this is a beach or down lands where you can virtually be guaranteed a windy day. It’s a particularly romantic first date on a blustery autumn day when hats, gloves and the occasional cuddle are all necessary to keep you both warm.
