The simplest check you can do is to 'google them by putting their name in inverted commas in the serch box e.g. "Jane Smith"

If you know a little more about them, for example where they went to school or university you could take a look in Friends Reunited.

Allows you to lo search through four billion names in the United States, United kingdom, Ireland, Europe, Canada and Australia. It's a bit slow at times but does work.
